The SD card keeps the board's password, certificate and settings
Installing from the SD card used to be a factory reset: the password back to turing, a new self-signed certificate, the settings gone. The installer now keeps them when it can verify they are intact, and a factory-reset.txt on the card forces a reset when you want one.

Installing from the SD card now keeps the board's settings. A user reported on Discord that after an upgrade the root password was back at
turingand the certificate was new.The whole entry
That is exactly what an install from the card did: the installer formatted the whole flash, overlay included, so every card install was a factory reset, and nothing said so beforehand.
The installer (now our fork,
excavador-turing/BMC-Installer) keeps the overlay: the password, the certificate, the network and node settings. It keeps them only when it can verify they are intact; if it cannot, it erases them as before and says why on the serial console, rather than carry something it cannot vouch for into the new image. To force a factory reset, put a file named
factory-reset.txtnext toinstall.txton the card (its contents are ignored). The installer's serial prompt still accepts ERASE as well. The
.tpuover-the-air upgrade is still the normal way to upgrade; the card is for recovery and first installs. The staged-firmware and rollback notes on the overlay are now dropped at boot when the volume they describe no longer exists, which is the state a card install leaves behind.
